Styling Your Family
Now that your session is scheduled, let's talk wardrobe! The clothing you choose can completely transform the look and feel of your final images. I'm particular about three things - clothing, location, and time of day - because together, they make all the difference.
When styling your family, think coordinating, not matching. Choose outfits based on a shared color palette rather than identical pieces. Here are my top tips:
1. Start with Mom
Choose Mom's outfit first—something that fits well, flatters, and makes her feel confident. This becomes the foundation for the rest of the family's looks.
2. Build a Color Palette
Use Mom's outfit as your guide. If it has multiple colors, select 3–4 of them for your palette. If it's a solid color, choose 2–3 complementary tones to mix in.
3. Think Timeless, Not Trendy
While it's fun to wear the latest trends, consider whether they'll look dated in a few years. Opt for classic styles that will stand the test of time.
By coordinating (not over-matching), incorporating layers, and choosing timeless pieces, you'll create a look that feels both stylish and comfortable—perfect for photos you'll cherish for years.
Things to Avoid
- Overly "matchy-matchy" outfits that lack personality
- Clothing with large logos or distracting graphics
- Too many bold patterns (limit to 1-2 people in patterns)
- Ill-fitting pieces - try everything on beforehand, shoes included
